Ingredients:

  • 1 lb spaghetti

For the meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef, 70/30
  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 7 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 small yellow onion, grated
  • 1 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup italian breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 tbsp milk or water
  • 1 egg, beaten slightly
  • 1 tbsp dried parsley
  • 1 tbsp dried basil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp chicken bouillon powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper

For the sauce:

  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 head of garlic, minced
  • 1 head yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp dried parsley
  • 1 tbsp dried basil
  • 1 tbsp dried italian seasoning (optional)
  • 1 (36 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 medium-sized carrot, grated
  • 1 tbsp chicken base
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 cup red wine
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, mix the ground beef and ground pork with the rest of the meatball ingredients. Refrigerate for two hours to develop the flavors.
  2. To make meatballs, form 1-1/2 inches sized meatballs.
  3. Heat the pan with 2 tbsp olive oil. Fry the meatballs in batches until golden brown. Don’t try to fit too many into the pan at once!
  4. Flip each meatball to ensure both sides are well toasted. Be careful not to break them as you flip.
  5. Set the meatballs aside and prepare the sauce.

For the marinara sauce:

  1. In heated pot, add 2 tbsp olive oil.
  2. Saute the garlic and onion until translucent.
  3. Add the dried parsley, basil and italian seasoning.
  4. Add the tomato sauce, grated carrots, chicken flavor, brown sugar, and red wine, and simmer for an hour.
  5. Add the meatballs and simmer for half an hour.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.

For the pasta:

  1. Fill a big pot with water and add 2 tbsp of salt. Bring to a boil.
  2. Cook the pasta until al dente (usually you can refer to the pastas package for more detail on this).
  3. Drain and drizzle with olive oil.
  4. Serve with marinara and meatballs. Enjoy!

Note:

You can also use a mix of veal, pork, and beef for more flavorful meatballs!
