This is a very popular snack in Hawaii. This is more like sushi without the vinegar in the rice. Making this is very easy; even kids can do it! Give it a try, and let some little ones help out if you’d like!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups calrose rice
- 2 cups water
- 1 can spam
- Nori sheets
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
Directions:
- Wash the rice until water runs clear.
- Place the rice in a colander.
- In a pot, add 3 cups of water and the rice.
- Cover and cook on medium high heat. When it starts to boil lower the heat and simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the rice is done.
- While the rice is cooking prepare your marinade for the spam. Combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, and pepper. Marinate the spam for 15 minutes.
- In a skillet, heat oil over medium high heat and cook the spam until golden brown on both sides.
- Place the musubi mold in the center of the nori sheets then add around 3 to 4 tablespoon of rice and press the rice until its firm.
- Add the spam on top and add another layer of rice. Press firmly.
- Remove the musubi mold and fold over the nori to the top and do the same on the other side.
- Cut the musubi sushi with a wet knife around 2 inches long.
- Serve while warm. Enjoy!
Note:
We made both so we can test which one is better…with eggs or without. Well, it depends, iI like the one with eggs and my kids like the one without so.
