Tortillas

This tortilla recipe is as authentic as it gets! Keep in mind that it makes it SO much easier when using a tortilla press; the process won’t be as tiring and long, and your tortillas will come out with a nicer round shape. My friend brought her wooden tortilla press when we made this together and she said that the round type is not good because it makes uneven tortillas. But if you don’t have one, you don’t mind spending a little time and energy, and you aren’t as much concerned about shape, then old-fashioned kneading and rolling will work just fine!

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups masa harina
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 tsp sea salt

Directions:

  • In a big bowl, add masa harina and salt. Mix salt.
  • Add the water 1 cup at a time and mix with your hand. Continue until you incorporate all the water. Knead the dough for a few minutes. The dough should be firm and springy, but not dry or sticky. Add water if necessary.
  • Cover and let rest for an hour.
  • Pinch a golf-ball sized of masa and form into a ball.
  • Put the masa in between two pieces of plastic wrap and press with your tortilla press.
  • Gently remove the plastic wrap.
  • Place onto a preheated griddle or non-stick pan and cook for about 1 minute on each side. Don’t put oil on your griddle.
  • Cover your cooked tortilla with cloth to keep it warm.
  • Serve with your favorite filling.
  • Yum!
