The secret of good lasagna is Italian sausage. It doesn’t take much to add tons of flavor to this Italian favorite!
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb Italian sausage
- 1 medium sized yellow onion, minced
- 5 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 1/2 cup red wine
- 12 oz tomato paste
- 50 oz tomato sauce
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped basil
- 1/4 cup chopped parsley
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tbsp chicken base
- Salt and pepper
- 16 oz ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- Grated mozzarella cheese
- Parmesan cheese
Directions:
- In a heavy saucepan, cook the sausage and ground beef until brown.
- Add the garlic and onion. Saute until the onion is soft.
- Stir in the tomato paste and tomato sauce. Stir until combined.
- Add the basil, parsley, Italian seasoning, chicken base, and red wine. Bring to a boil and simmer covered, for about 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Season with salt and pepper as desired.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain the noodles. Rinse with cold water to avoid sticking.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, eggs, parsley, and parmesan cheese.
- To assemble, spread the meat sauce on a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Arrange the cooked noodles (lengthwise) over the meat sauce.
- Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture on top of the noodles. Add grated mozzarella. Add another layer of meat sauce on top of the mozzarella.
- Add another layer of noodles. Add the meat sauce and mozzarella on top.
- On the last layer, add the noodles and top with mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
- Drizzle the bechamel sauce all over the top.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the cover and bake for another 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Serve while warm. Enjoy!
