Best Lasagna

The secret of good lasagna is Italian sausage. It doesn’t take much to add tons of flavor to this Italian favorite!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 medium sized yellow onion, minced
  • 5 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 1/2 cup red wine
  • 12 oz tomato paste
  • 50 oz tomato sauce
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped basil
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tbsp chicken base
  • Salt and pepper
  • 16 oz ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • Grated mozzarella cheese
  • Parmesan cheese

Directions:

  1. In a heavy saucepan, cook the sausage and ground beef until brown.
  2. Add the garlic and onion. Saute until the onion is soft.
  3. Stir in the tomato paste and tomato sauce. Stir until combined.
  4. Add the basil, parsley, Italian seasoning, chicken base, and red wine. Bring to a boil and simmer covered, for about 2 hours. Stir occasionally. Season with salt and pepper as desired.
  5. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. Drain the noodles. Rinse with cold water to avoid sticking.
  6. In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, eggs, parsley, and parmesan cheese.
  7. To assemble, spread the meat sauce on a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  8. Arrange the cooked noodles (lengthwise) over the meat sauce.
  9. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture on top of the noodles. Add grated mozzarella. Add another layer of meat sauce on top of the mozzarella.
  10. Add another layer of noodles. Add the meat sauce and mozzarella on top.
  11. On the last layer, add the noodles and top with mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
  12. Drizzle the bechamel sauce all over the top.
  13. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  14. Remove the cover and bake for another 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  15. Serve while warm. Enjoy!
