This sweet and tangy barbecue sauce is not only great with barbecue, but goes great with pork and beans or in sandwiches, too. The addition of tamarind paste adds a distinctive taste that gives it this tangy, earthy flavor!
Ingredients:
- 4 cups water
- 3/4 cup white vinegar
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 6 oz tomato paste
- 1 cup tomato ketchup
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 3 tbsp onion powder
- 2 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp paprika
- 2 tbsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp chicken powder
- 1 1/2 tsp mustard powder
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/8 tsp anise
- 2 tbsp tamarind paste
Directions:
- In a pot, add all the ingredients except the tamarind paste.
- Whisk until smooth with no more lumps.
- In a small bowl, add the tamarind paste.
- Add about 1/4 cup of the mixture and combine it with the tamarind paste until smooth. Discard the seeds.
- Add the tamarind to the mixture. Mix to combine.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for 45 minutes.
- Dissolve the cornstarch in 1/4 cup tap water.
- Add the cornstarch to the mixture while stirring constantly.
- Simmer for another 5 minutes. Stir and let cool.
- Transfer in a mason jar and place in the fridge until ready to use.
Note:
Barbecue sauce can stay in the fridge for months. You can use corn syrup to replace the sugar but since this is a homemade sauce I try to use a more natural ingredients.
